    THE NEW FIGURATIVE SURREALISM

    ART OF "TOPIARIA"

    Full and empty in Art.
In this century the "full and empty" binomial has had a fundamental role in Art.
"Full and Empty" in decades, affected every trend or artistic movement underlining thier course.
In order to undestand the dialog between this two places artists looked at the relationship between the two components of an art wok and at their positioning in the space, adjusting this latter based on the necessity of the parts. The artis, in composing his art work, have to pay attention not only on the selection of the elements, but moreover on the way they have to be organized always in connection to the meaning that he wants to communicate.
According to my experience as an artis the criteria that dictate the organization of the composition of a my art work are various and correspond to the numerous ways an art work can be structured based on symmetry or asymmetry, ritm, static equilibrium  or dynamic equilibrium among the parts that compose it.
In this my latter production, for which I inspired to the Italian Gardens and on the art of "Topiaria" the painting can have a load bearing structure or more particularly fundamental axes that characterize the shape or the scene around which all other elements are organized.
Simplifying the main structure and highlighting its main axes we will obtain a structual scheme. On this code we recognize similar the shapes giving a common meaning to them all.
The main structure in an art work of mines is not the only one possible, exists as well an alternative tyoe of organization, the modular one that allows an infinitive variety of compositive processes. The modular structure for instance in the case of "Topiaria" is given by the repetition of an identical part, even if diferent  different in size, called modulus. Modulus is a unity of shape when it is constituted by an element that is always identical.A modula composition in a  art work of mines shall start from an element (hedges, trees etc...) tha will be repeted in the tridimensional space by rotating the base element: by changing   his orientation on the plane and on the space (labyrints). The more complex will be the main shape the more complex and articulate will appera the composition.

    Symmetry and asymmetry
The evaluation criteria are really simple: symmetry-asimmetry, ritm, weight and equilibrium, strenght lines.
The structure or composition in some of my paintings transmit a sense of order and equilibrium, a sense of staticity and immobility. Asymmetry in other paintings transmit a sense of more freedom, movement and dynamism. In nature everything is organized on rtims (the day and the night, the seasons) but its repetitivity is not monotony thank to small variants that characterize every natural creation.
Summarizing we can say that from the organization of the elements and distances between them rise many ritms with numerous communicative possibilities.

    Weight and equilibria
The part that attracts our attention so resulting more important has in the composition a dominant weight. In my art works weight is always determined by the positioning of the shapes, their dimensions and by the colors of one or more elements. This means that the less heavy parts are useless: every small part helps in decoding  the whole. The position of the weight in my art works determines thier equilibrium: it will be stable when the weight is at the center.

    Streght lines
In the nature as well as in art works we perceive shapes and colors that determine several trends: the most evident attracts our attention and constitutes the strengh-lines of the composition. Our sight individuate them even if they are not drawn, since they are suggested by the shapes, by their colours, by their size and by their position in the painting. According to the prevailing trend of its strenght-lines an art work  will communicate a sense of movement or staticity, stability or instability. The strenght-lines contribute to the definition of the structure of my art works and underline the organization of the existing elements.

    THE UNREAL RELISM
    DREAMS AND GARDENS

The art of "Topiaria" consists  nowadays in tracing and developing, following strict rules, precises hedges and trees in those fantastic and geometric shapes that were expression of order and formal integrity in the greek and roman world. A technique that in the Middle Ages has been maintained alive only in the ancient monasteries and tha was rediscovered during the Renaissance, when with an essential style myrtle, yew-tree, laurel and box thickets and hedges were elaborated. In the big gardens the magnificence was celebrated while intimacy prevailed in the smaller ones. A fashion extended through all the Europe, from Italy to Spain and from Holland to France.

I think that a fixed point of cohesion, a sealing, with what has been and the new Maurizio Brambilla's works, realizes in the scission between reality an the oneiric world through the rigour of a surrealistic representation of the natural interior structure of the man. Maurizio Brambilla  expresses through his geometrical gardens or  the primeval enigma or  symbolic ideograms of labyrints a  natural order where today's man can find harmony and consolation. This  is clear from works such as "Topiaria" , "Green" and others where the nature is rendered harmonious for the game of Golf. The search for wide spaces, linearity and semplicity in the wide golf meadows built for playing.

The experience at "Accademia di Brera" and as shenographer at "Teatro la Scala di Milano" have been two fundamental hinges of the cultural path for the formation of a young lombard artist.

What dominated in his latest works is the relationship between real image and imagination which highlits visible realities and path of collective cross. Figurative vibrations originated from landscape memories are expressed with omogeneous and well equilibrated chromatism.

It is the new figurative surrealism of Maurizio Brambilla with aspects of interior realism interpreted skillfully  in a naturalistic form.
An ambitious target achieved through the complex search between his own Es and art by one of the most coherent and interesting contemporary artists in the italian and european outline.

    Lights on the sea
    LIGHTS ON THE SEA
    MY DIARY OF IMAGES

In my education as painter I think day after day more about an art able to express the interior passions and feelings of the Man in the act of the search truth, a truth that is mystrious and hard to investigate.
Painting is a way of living, a way to gain consciousness, that is one's intuition or allegory of the reality.
Novalis, german romantic poet who lived between the end of '700 and the first years of the '800, wrote: "What it is outside me it is really inside me its of my own and viceversa".
According to Novalis there is no contraddiction between internal world and external world, the direction of the mysterious path is towards us, inside our hart, he truth is inside ourselves.
When I set about to begin a paint or a study, I start from a real fact nevertheless anything wrapping the reality have to be overhelmed and I try go beyond the real; a kind o fantasy take place that translates sense perceptions in mathaphisical images that can not be expressed in language or conventional images.
In my painting everything is suspended between dream and tangibilty of the matter: the Milanese art critic Alberico Sala wrote in 1982 during  my exhibition at the gallery "La Nuova Sfera" in Milan "... Maurizio's painting is of mediation that though clearly figurative creates and stirs up atmospheres of methaphisical strains".

My imagination makes abjective travels to the heart and viceversa, transfiguring thing, landscapes and shapes with sharpness so creating a a surreal/metaphisical dialogue that I call "the new raffigurate surrealism".

In my last expression named "I FUOCHI DEL MARE", lighthouses are  depicted as towers glittering the light for the sailors in the night "one of the wonders of the world",  towers on which top is placed the big lantern to give the man a guideline through its nocturnal path to help him in finding the goal to be reached.

In these my paintings with the symbological and metaphisical entailings I wanted plainly express the above concepts: images and shapes can not, according to me, escape from their own fate of symbol and communication with the people, they are necessary to communicate and stiring up many feelings in the watcher in which making visible what it is not visible since the image brings the object to the sensorial experience.
